Dear Island Lake PTA Members,

Like many of you, the IL PTA leadership team has tried the last several weeks to wrap our heads around ending the school year during a pandemic that caused the postponement or cancellation of some of our favorite Island Lake year-end traditions, as well as how to celebrate our children’s accomplishments and resilience while our greater community is in pain. In this midst of all this, we’ve been very grateful for how IL teachers and staff have worked so creatively to keep our children engaged in learning and connected to their classroom communities. That is no small feat, and we cannot thank them enough for their dedication.

Additionally, the PTA leadership team has been committed to finding different ways to continue supporting and serving our school community since March, and we will keep looking for opportunities to carry out the mission of PTA. If you have any questions about the brief details and updates below or suggestions beyond these items, please let us know. We look forward to meeting in person with you again soon. Thank you for the many ways you support Island Lake through PTA!

  • Ralph Reeder Food Shelf: $1300 was donated in March.

  • Special funding: A special funding request was approved for the fish tank in the school library.

  • Online Scholastic Book Fair: All profits will be available in Scholastic Dollars and given to teachers.

  • Teacher Appreciation Week: Handwritten cards of appreciation were mailed to all Island Lake and Snail Lake staff. Slideshows of family-submitted photos with messages of appreciation were emailed to teachers.

  • Outdoor classroom: Members voted to approve the estimate provided by SafetyFirst Playgrounds. Predicted construction start is July or August.

  • Kindergarten send-off: Island Lake water bottles usually given to kindergartners when they visit first grade classrooms in May were given out at a drive-through send-off at Snail Lake Education Center during the last week of school. PTA also provided a large sign to congratulate kindergartners.

  • Fifth grade send-off: Instead of a PTA-sponsored picnic on the last day of school, t-shirts for all fifth graders will be given out at a drive-through send-off on June 4. PTA also provided a large sign to congratulate fifth graders.

  • Yearbook distribution: Details are forthcoming because of production delays at Jostens.

  • Apex Fun Run: We continue to be in communication with Apex about our event in late October. Apex has successfully run online-only events this spring and is able to provide flexibility in the fall for Island Lake if needed.

  • Officers: The following officers will continue in the same positions at least until school resumes:

    • President: Andrea Kirkman

    • Vice Presidents: Jennifer Danielson, Kristin Gonzalez

    • Co-Treasurers: Jenny Sayre, Pam Wong

    • Secretary: Jennifer Hainley

Planning Ahead: Postponed Business to Be Conducted in September

  • Voting needs to be held for:

    • PTA 2020-2021 calendar and budget

    • Current officer positions: President and Secretary (term length is one year and two consecutive terms are allowed; vote is for current President and Secretary to enter second terms), and one Co-Treasurer (term length is two years and two consecutive terms are allowed; vote is for current Co-Treasurer to enter second term). Vice Presidents do not have term limits.

    • Open positions: Co-President and Vice President of Communications

      • For any office, uncontested elections may be held virtually if necessary, but in-person voting is recommended by the MN PTA. The due date for nominations and a meeting date for voting will be announced in September.
